ELMED stroboscopes create a stir
POLYTHERA is a water, sound & light installation inspired by the slow-motion metamorphosing liquid that covers the surface of the planet 'Solaris', in Stanislaw Lem's book and Andrei Tarkovsky's film adaptation of it. The installation consists of a basin filled with water which is caused to vibrate by a sound at the frequency of 34 Hz. Stroboscopic light beams on the water surface at a steady strobe, tuned to the frequency of the tone which sets the water into vibration. The fast interference between the vibrating water and the strobe light generates an illusion to the eye: The water looks like a liquid mass moving in slow-motion. POLYTHERA was created for the H2O exhibition in St. Petersburg, September 2008 and curated by the international arts organization CEC Artslink. Read more on Jacob Kirkegaard's website http://fonik.dk

ISO-Automat P2D2 – the New Generation of In Plant Holiday Detection Systems
Press release – „Tube & Pipe Technology“, July 2004
Visitors of the TUBE 04 in Düsseldorf had the chance to meet the latest result of the future trend in the field of in plant holiday detection. The ISO-Automat P2D2 ideally combines the functions of a DC testing unit required for film coatings, FBE etc. with the unique features of the proven ISO-Automat P2 which is applied for three layer coatings as PE or PU. Both units are centred around a most modern touch PC control offering the complete monitoring and quality documentation of the testing process. An informative base not only for modern SPC management but for the optimisation of the complete production process. At the same time the PC includes a control panel which allows a most comfortable, intuitive handling of the operation. Options as the registration and tracking of the pipes, colour marking systems, pipe end detection etc. are available.
The decision for an ISO-Automat P2D2 makes it easy to fulfil the various requirements of the market -starting of with the acceptance inspection of the customer and closing with the internal quality goal of 100% free of porosity combined with maximum production output. In addition the in plant testing system is designed to meet international standards and applies approved testing procedures with many unique advantages appreciated world-wide.
Coming all from one source, the robust quality designed for rugged industrial conditions, proven reliability for online production including easy maintenance and service are just some of many advantages which make the ISO-Automat a profitable, long-time investment. The well engineered concept guarantees flexibility for customisation and changing demands over the years including performance reserves offered only by the ISO-Automat P2D2.
Major Improvements to Holiday Detection Inline System for Coatings
ELMED, Germany, has made a number of impressive improvements to the ISO-automat holiday detection system with several features for further optimisation of the online testing process. This improved technique to bolster any new production line became successfully operational at a manufacturing facility in Izmit, Turkey at the beginning of this year. The ISO-Automat P2 with „Plug & Play“ holiday detection inline system, with touch Screen, is ideal for use with tube and pipe coatings. The new flexible and smart mounting solution for different sizes of testing electrodes minimises times for assembling and modification. The new type of semi-circle brush electrode with its extra hold up row of bristles guarantees the longevity of the electrode. In addition, the new Pore-X control software that supports the easy set-up and change of specific testing parameters is supplied with detailed and clear documentation complete with many pictures for easy assembling and operation.
Available shortly will be a plug and socket connection to combine the separate modules of the ISO-Automat systems. This is the next step to make even customised testing equipment become a ‘plug and play’ solution.

Reliable testing of thin coatings
Press Release July 2002 „ITAN“
At the TUBE in April ELMED successfully presented the NEW ISOTEST® - ISO-Automat D2 DC Testing System With the ISO-Automat D2 system thin coatings like FBE, Rilsan etc. can be tested in a safe and reliable way. Precise adjustment and control of the testing voltage guarantees testing according to relevant regulations and customer specifications. Easy control and complete documentation of the testing results are provided by the optionally integrated Panel PC with touch-screen control. Due to its flexibility, the ISO-Automat D2 adapts easily to a wide variety of testing methods: Helical testing for rotating pipes using a flat electrode, whereas circumferential testing is the method of choice for non-rotating pipes. The intelligent microprocessor control system guarantees the highest degree of measuring certainty and fault tolerance. The testing voltage is adjustable from 0.5 kV – 6.4 kV and is constantly monitored by the electronic controller
The new testing system as well as the ISO-Automat P2 with impulse technique can be ideally combined with the new Pore-X software and an industrial grade Panel PC This solution achieves the utmost ease of operation and comprehensive test records and traceability of high voltage testing. according to the ISO 9000 series
The Pore-X software monitors and controls multiple high voltage test instruments. Indicated pores and solid-state changes are issued as text messages with date and time stamps. All results are shown on the bright display of the Panel-PC and recorded on a harddisk. Inspection parameters can be set easily with the touch screen. The store and forward function enables unlimited storage of parameter sets.
Online Testing of Coatings with Electrical Impulses
The most diverse kinds of pipe coatings can be tested rationally and reliably with the ISO-Automat P2, from Elmed, designed to detect damage and pores. Even the smallest pores and faults are detected dependably and without damaging the material by the use of extremely short high-voltage impulses.
The company has decades of experience in the field of high-voltage testing, while numerous references and continuous development work are the basis for the professional analysis of specific requirements and a flexible implementation.
The complete turnkey systems allow adaptation to international test standards, with specific coatings processes such as side extrusion and crosshead extrusion and also semi and fully automatic testing. The ISOTEST®, a manual holiday detector, is a highlight of this range of online testing equipment. As the coating processes in modern pipe mills are constantly gaining pace, a testing speed up to 2000 mm/s is sustained.
The integrated, network-compatible industrial PC monitors and documents the parameters of the modular test system and supports an easy adaptation to each specific application. A contact-free colour marking system is supported by the pipe end detection and tracking system and simplifies the discovery of faults by closely marking the positions of pores.
Online Holiday Detection
At the coming Tube 2002 exhibition, Düsseldorf, Germany, ELMED will present an overview on up to date technical standards and developments in the field of online holiday detection.
In 2001, ELMED GmbH again supplied several online holiday detector systems for stationary testing of pipe coatings. ELMED has won a contract for the supply of an ISO-automat holiday detector system for the world`s most prestigious and technically challenging pipeline project - Bluestream.
The ISO-automat equipment uses the unique high voltage pulse technique. It therefore allows the online and even all around inspection of the 4mm thick, three layer polypropylene coating. The system is capable of checking the 12.2m single length pipes as well as quadruple joints of 48.8m length, assembled in the on-shore base close to the Black Sea.
After a 100 per cent coating test with the ELMED ISO-automat the quadruple joints will be transported on-board the S7000 vessel to be welded and installed using the J-lay method.
Another ISO-Automat system was ordered by Logstor Ror, Denmark, for the online testing of FBE coatings applied to 20" pipes. This equipment increases the existing high standard of continuous quality assurance.
In addition, the ELMED Service Group successfully set into operation the recently delivered ISO-automat testing module at Corinth Pipe Works S.A., Greece, this summer.
The system is capable of checking corrosion protective coatings applied on pipes up to 100". This latest technology includes a data monitoring system and a PC-based remote control. Complementary PC-Software increases the versatility, by visualisation, of the system parameters.
